The Archive
The House
Meijiajing was created in 1962. Its first product was a hair pomade, Meijiajing toula, which the archive describes as the equivalent of what is now called hair cream. The archive records that the pomade sold strongly on release and won a number of national awards, and that an early example of it is still kept on display in the Mao Zedong Memorial Hall.
In the years of unified state purchase and distribution, the brand's cosmetics moved through state channels that ran from first-tier department wholesale stations down to second- and third-tier stations and on to retail shops, and the archive records that the brand became widely known through that national network.
Snow-fungus and pearl cream followed in 1978. Pearl has a long history in Chinese skin care: the archive records that from court women to ordinary women, people took pearl powder or applied it to the face to whiten and smooth the skin. Snow fungus (yiner) is described as nutritious and as used for the complexion.
Four decades on, the brand took a rice-water skin treatment recorded in the classic Liji and applied it to a fermented-rice moisturising range: selected rice is naturally fermented into a rice-yeast essence, with anti-wrinkle peptides added. The brand describes its approach as nourishing the skin with natural materials — plants and food ingredients — worked with modern technology to draw out their active essence.
What They Make
Hair pomade (toula) — the brand's first product, launched in 1962; the archive describes it as the forerunner of present-day hair cream.
Snow-fungus and pearl cream (yiner zhenzhu shuang) — developed in 1978, drawing on the Chinese practice of using pearl and on the skin benefits the archive attributes to snow fungus.
Fermented-rice moisturising range — a later line based on a rice-water treatment recorded in the classic Liji, using a naturally fermented rice-yeast essence with added anti-wrinkle peptides.
